Hello, I am gathering information about homeschooling my children for the first time. My son is in the gifted program at his school and on the math team. I was wondering exactly what a math studio is? What part does it play in a lesson? Thank you for your time!
Hello Rachel, thank you very much for your inquiry.
The Online Math Studio is a program to empower math learners to work in partnership with other math learners to become collaborative designers. The designers will use digital storytelling to explore and express math in a medium of their own preference. Designers will start where they are most comfortable getting to share and showcase their skills with their collaboration partners. In time designers will learn new design skills on their own and through collaboration.
Math learning will happen based on each student’s interests and needs through a flipped math classroom model. Designers will support each other and receive mentor coaching from the leader. Self-directed learning skills are an important part of the new skillset to be mentored.
The end result is for each designer to create projects separately and as a team that provide them an opportunity to get to dig in deeply to develop and apply their math knowledge.
This program complements math competition. Rather than designers motivating themselves by competition, developers are motivated by the joy of mastery. Most importantly, this program is designed to develop the much needed 21st century skills of online collaboration.
I hope that answers your questions. I look forward to your comments.
